SewYou Sewing Workshop

Last Saturday I attended my first sewing workshop run by the lovely Abi at SewYou Handmade.

As I told Abi and the 3 other sewing students, I probably haven’t used a sewing machine in about 10 years and even then it was a school textiles project and my Mum did most of the actual sewing!

Over 2 years ago on a visit home for Christmas I said to my Mum I wanted to learn to sew. The morning we were due to set off back to Leeds from Kent my Mum took me to the Singer shop in the local high street and bought me a basic model as a Christmas present. Since then my sewing machine has been rather unloved, it has been shoved in a cupboard and not once been taken out of the box! I put this down to fear. Fear of breaking it and fear of generally just being rubbish at sewing.

Since joining Twitter in May Abi and I have exchanged tweets and I vowed I would find the time to attend one of her workshops. Then, a few weeks ago, I saw a post on Facebook for 30% off the workshop scheduled for the 2nd of July and thought right, I must take advantage of that and just get on with it! So I phoned the lovely Angela at The Butterfly Rooms, Saltaire and booked my place.

I was a little unsure of what to expect and apprehensive about using a sewing machine for the first time in so many years but Abi was lovely and put me at ease straight away. We had the choice of making a book bag or an apron. I went for the bag as growing up I had so many bags and now my Mum is convinced I should make and sell my own, eeek!

So along the way we chatted, browsed some books and magazines, drank tea and learnt how to thread the machines, wind a bobbin and make a bag from some scraps of supplied fabric (you can take your own if you want). Abi even let us play with some bondaweb and showed us how to do some satin stitch applique! I opted not to add anything else to the outside of my bag due to the large floral motif of the fabric but I enjoyed watching the others have a go.

So, here is my creation!

As you can tell it’s quite Cath Kidston-esque which everyone who knows me well won’t be surprised by! It isn’t perfect but for my first attempt I’m really rather chuffed! Most importantly I have conquered that initial fear of oh my god, I cannot thread a sewing machine! I honestly came home feeling really confident and inspired to just get stitching with my machine to see where it takes me and had quite a few ideas buzzing around in my head. I know I have a lot to learn so I must just book myself on another workshop in the near future :)

I had an absolutely brilliant day so a big thank you to Abi for all her help and guidance. A big wave to Emily AKA @FearfulPenguin who also attended the workshop. It was lovely to meet you both.

If your interested in attending one of Abi's workshops, and I can promise you wont be disappointed, you can find more information and dates here.

Me and my new Pinny

If you follow me on Twitter or follow the lovely Loula Belle at Home and her blog you will already know that I was the lucky winner of one of her pinnys!

When it was announced that I had won on Loula Belle's blog I had to re-read it several times to be sure I hadn't imagined it as I consider myself one of those people who never wins anything! Sure enough I had won and I already new which pinny was for me so I sent Leonie an email to let her know and tell her how excited I was to have won! Here is the pinny I chose...

You can find more pictures on the Loula Belle at Home Blog too.

I am so pleased with my choice and have been putting it to good use already! I really would recommend one of these lovely handmade, one of a kind pinnies so go on and treat yourself! I bet they make great gifts too. Check out Loula Belle at Home's Etsy shop.

Thank you again to Leonie at Loula Belle at Home.

A little about me...

Welcome to my first blog post and thank you for stopping by!

Before I get started I thought I'd share a little of information about myself, incase you're curious! Well, my name is Amy and I'm 26 and I leave near Leeds with my husband and our two lovely cats.

There are a few main events of my life in the last 5 years or so that have led me to this blog and what I hope will be a full website...someday in the near future!

About 5 years ago when I moved into my 1st rented flat with my hubby, then boyfriend, I bought a copy of Ideal Home Magazine for some inspiration on decor and furnishings and that's where my obsession with all things interiors really started. Since then I have developed a huge list of my favourite online retailers and independent stockists where I frequently go online window shopping. More about that shortly...

In the last 4 years we have bought a house and got married and my stack of interior design magazines just keeps on growing!

Then a year ago I took a promotion in my day job in Customer Services and was faced with the reality of something I have always suspected, me and the world or big corporate companies just do not mix! Whilst I cannot say I hate going to work, I really don't enjoy all the frustrations and office politics that I have to deal with on a daily basis.

So, I started thinking about what I really want to do and thought I really should put my passion for furniture, furnishing and interiors to good use but I can't really see myself as an interior designer or anything of that sort. I then started trawling thorough all the bookmarked websites and thought they really needed organising and that is where The Patchwork Home was born. I decided to get started with a blog and share all my favourite retailers through weekly (hopefully) blog posts and see how things pan out...

Our house is still a work in progress in terms of renovation and decoration so I may decide to share some posts on our progress, if you're interested that is?!! I am also trying to find time to get to grips with my sewing machine, a gift from my mum a couple of years who is and avid sewer. We'll see how that relationship develops and I might just decide to blog about that too.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed hearing a little about me and my blog. Feel free to leave a comment and thanks reading.

P.S. Oh and I forgot to say a massive thank you to all those I have met on Twitter recently! You've all been fab! :) xx
